Boxing greats, luminaries to be feted at WBC 3rd Women’s Convention and Asian Summit

Philippines thru the Games and Amusements Board will host the wbc 4 in 1 World convention .Chairman Abraham Khalil Mitra confirm the said awards will honor former and current boxing champions as well as past heads of the government agency during the WBC 3rd Women’s Convention and Asian Summit on Nov. 16-29 at the PICC in Pasay City, Philippine

POSTHUMOUS AWARD

1 GABRIEL “FLASH” ELORDE (WBC Jr. Lightweight Champion Feb.16, 1963)

Elorde went on to win the world Super featherweight championship from Harold Gomes by seventh round knockout on march 16, 1960.Elorde kept his world title inside the division for 7 years and 2 months with 10 successful defenses. A great and fearless fighter, Elorde was one of the most beloved athletes since pancho villa.

Authored the constitution that was ratified during the Manila Convention presided by WBC president Justiniano Montano, jr., also a Filipino.

5 LOPE “PAPA” SARREAL (Promoter)

Born on September 25, 1905 in Imus, Cavite, Philippines. Known as “Papa” Sarreal is an icon in Philippine boxing. The “Grand Old Man of Philippine Boxing” produced 22 world champions during his illustrious career. Sarreal is most often associated with Hall of Famer Gabriel (FLASH) Elorde, the great Philippine junior lightweight champion. Elorde, incidentally, is Sarreal’s son-in-law having married his daughter, Laura. In addition to Elorde, other world titlist guided by Sarreal include flyweight Masao Ohba, super lightweight Saensak Muangsurin and Super featherweight Ricardo Arrendondo. Sarrael is credited with introducing big-time boxing in Korea, Thailand and Japan and opening the Asian market to pro boxing. The influential and reversed Sarreal died on March 14, 1995.
