During the WBC weekly press conference, WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán expressed grave concern for the ultra dangerous and appalling practice of “Boxing Tourism” based mainly in Tijuana , Veracruz and Torreon.
He’s determined to nip this cruel and degrading mismatch horror, fiasco in the bud, denouncing those who are responsible, Calling it ” A barbaric ” act where the life of a human being is put at risk.”
Some allegations have led the WBC to discover that in Baja California Norte, this ghastly spectacle has increased, as some people has been bringing young people from the United States to fight in Mexico with “pigeons” who have no experience. He mentioned several examples of fighters who have reached the ring, where the should have no business at all, with absurd records like the case of José Luis Vazquez, who has won 3 fights and lost 19, the last of them by knockout.
The assembled media were shown some films of totally degrading so called tourism boxing bouts in which out of shape novices were terribly badly beaten.
Unfortunately, and as Mauricio noted, this practice is permitted by some Commissions, managers, coaches, promoters and all those who become complicit in allowing these fights.
He commented that, in the WBC annual Convention, earlier this month in Baku, Azerbaijan, this was one of the main issues that was explained by Dean Lohuis, who’s President of the Committee Against Mismatches.
This committee wax created two years ago. Dean explains that they work with BoxRec, an organization which meticulous gathers details and data about the pugilists to make sure they fight against opponents of the same level of experience and skill, rather than mismatches.
Mauricio said that the Tijuana Commission is suspended in reporting results in BoxRec.
Non existent championships have been contested in Torreón and the State of Mexico. They were discovered and revealed thanks to the timely report of certain members, who are aware of the seriousness of the situation.
President of MEXICO CITY COMBOX, Ciro Nucci called this a crime, putting lives at risk, saying unscrupulous people are behind this. Hex stressed monitoring and reporting are key to unmasking those responsible.
WBC President Maurico Sulaiman also said: “This something which is totally unacceptable and we’re going to the very end to stop this. It’s horrendous and you wouldn’t think something like this could exist in 2017.”
