New WBC super bantamweight champion Brandon Lee Figueroa who`s on a special visit to Mexico with his family, is keen to get straight back into training and preparation for his new quest to add another belt to his cherished Green and Gold accolade.
Sitting by his Father Omar, beside World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman who draped the Belt over his shoulders, and close to his Mum Judith and his Sister Omayra, Brandon who looked studious, wearing gold rimmed glasses, stressed that the next mission is to take on and defeat WBO Champion Stephen “Cool Boy Steph” Fulton on September 11th. Deeply honored to be compared to the Great Carlos Zarate, Brandon said he`d trained super hard, in order to overcome and defeat the formidable Luis Nery.
In an interview with the WBC, Brandon said:
“Oh man, it means everything to be here in Mexico City. I consider myself more Mexican than American and this is just an opportunity and a blessing to represent Mexico at its highest, in a career and a sport which I love so much. It just means so much to me.“
WBC: What is your analysis of Stephen Fulton? Obviously it`s going to be a different type of fight.
Brandon: Yes of course. He has more of a technical boxing style. Hes going to be flashy in the first couple of rounds. I have to box him a little more and to be a little more technical. But I
m going to apply pressure and be more of a counter puncher against him.”
WBC: Why do you often switch from conventional to southpaw. You like doing this?
Brandon: It`s to confuse the opponent and it gives me the opportunity of more angles and more shots. It allows me to do my work as a righty/leftie and I have power in both hands. It helps me use my hand speed and my timing and I feel very comfortable as a leftie as well.
WBC: You won`t be able to stay at this weight indefinitely, when are you thinking about moving to featherweight?
Brandon: I say maybe by next year, if everything goes well, I don`t see why not. Maybe one or two more fights and then moving to one twenty six.
WBC: Was this latest fight the hardest in your career, or have there been harder ones?
Brandon: I have been in tougher fights. I think this last fight I was in tremendous shape and that was one of the reasons this fight wasn`t as complicated.
WBC: Why do they call you Heart Breaker?
Brandon: When I fought in Mexico, right across from where I live, there were children who cheered me on, saying here comes the Heart Breaker!”
