Flyweight contenders Brandon Moreno and Sergio Pettis will serve as the main event for UFC Fight Night 114 in Mexico City, Mexico.
The UFC’s next trip to Mexico City will feature flyweights in the main event. Indiscutido’s Rodrigo Del Campo reported on Sunday that rising contenders Brandon Moreno and Sergio Pettis will top the August 5th Fight Night card at the Arena Ciudad de México. UFC made the matchup official shortly thereafter.
Mexico’s Moreno (14-3) has won his last eleven professional bouts, with three of them taking place inside the Octagon. “The Assassin Baby” scored a short-notice upset of Louis Smolkalast October, then followed that up with a split decision over Ryan Benoit. In his most impressive victory to date, Moreno became the first man to finish Dustin Ortiz, submitting him with a rear-naked choke at UFC Nashville in April.
Pettis (15-2) is on a three-fight winning streak, having beaten Chris Cariaso, Chris Kelades, and most recently John Moraga by unanimous decision. He returned to flyweight after his first four UFC fights took place at bantamweight. His UFC flyweight debut ended in a shock TKO loss to Ryan Benoit at UFC 185, but he’s been flawless ever since. Pettis was scheduled to fight Henry Cejudo at UFC 211 last week, but Cejudo withdrew from the bout and Pettis was consequently removed from the event.
This is only the third time a non-title flyweight fight has headlined any UFC show, and the first time one has been scheduled for five rounds. The tournament semifinal rematch between Demetrious Johnson vs. Ian McCall topped a UFC on FX card in 2012, while Louis Smolka vs. Patrick Holohan was the last-minute main event of UFC Dublin in 2015, after the original main and co-main events fell through. Both of those matchups were three rounds.
UFC Fight Night: Moreno vs. Pettis airs live on Fox Sports 1. No other fights have been announced as of this writing.
