If Sam Eggington beats Hassan Mwakinyo on Saturday’s Khan-Vargas undercard and comes out of the fight with no injuries, ESPN reports that he’ll face Brandon Rios on September 22 at Wembley Stadium, on the Joshua-Povetkin undercard.
Rios (34-4-1, 25 KO) is coming off of a loss to Danny Garcia in February, his second fight back after a long absence following his 2015 loss to Timothy Bradley, where Rios looked very flat and as if he had nothing in the ring.
He did better against Garcia, trailing on the cards at the time of the stoppage in round nine, but fighting with the usual Rios spirit. Trainer Robert Garcia says that if Rios were to beat Eggington, he would have two more fights with Matchroom Boxing.
Eggington (23-4, 15 KO) is, like Rios, a good action fighter, and the matchup would be an attractive addition to the Wembley card. He’s a former European welterweight champion and retired Paulie Malignaggi in 2017. He lost his European title to Mohamed Mimoune in October of last year.
