Brian Ortega eyes lightweight run for the ‘perfect matchup’: I want to give the fans a war

A good number of possibilities have opened up for the undefeated Brian Ortega, after his huge win over Frankie Edgar on Saturday night at UFC 222. One of them is a shot at Max Holloway’s undisputed featherweight title, which UFC president Dana White had already confirmed.

Another opportunity that “T-City” is looking at is a jump to 155 pounds in the near future. However, he prefers to face an opponent that would be willing to give the fans their money’s worth.

“I’ve thought about it. We need the perfect match-up as far as a fight that I can really give the fans to see,” Ortega said on his recent guesting on the UFC Unfiltered podcast (transcript via MMA Weekly). “Not just a regular match. I really want to give them a war and something crazy and something big, especially if I’m going to move up a weight class.”

These plans are meant for if and when he ends up winning the 145-pound title, but as of the moment, he has his sights set on Holloway.

“I’ve definitely thought about it,” Ortega said. “My goal is, if I’m successful against Max Holloway, I’m looking at some opportunities and things in the 155 division.”

Holloway is still recovering from an injury, but if it were up to him, he would be fighting Ortega at UFC 226 on July 7th in Las Vegas on International Fight Week.
