Bronze medalist Filip Hrgovic signs with Sauerland

Heavyweight Filip Hrgovic of Croatia has signed with Team Sauerland.

Filip Hrgovic, a 2016 super heavyweight bronze medalist at Rio, has signed a professional promotional contract with Team Sauerland, the top promoter in Germany and one of the biggest firms in the world.

Hrgovic, 25, is a Croatian who made his pro debut on September 30, stopping veteran Raphael Zumbano Love (39-16-1, 31 KO) in the first round in Riga, Latvia, part of the Briedis-Perezundercard.

At Rio 2016, Hrgovic lost in the semifinal to eventual gold medalist Tony Yoka of France, a fight that was pretty controversial, and one I personally felt Hrgovic deserved to win. Along with his bronze in Rio, he won gold at the 2015 European Championships, and he’s also a familiar name in pro circles and has been for years — he was the one who cut David Haye in sparring in 2013, canceling a fight with Tyson Fury, and also worked with Kubrat Pulev ahead of Pulev’s 2014 bout with Wladimir Klitschko.

Hrgovic is also a World Series of Boxing veteran, going 26-4 in that competition. At 6’6”, he’s got the frame of a top modern heavyweight, and has skills. He’ll be an interesting prospect to add to the division in the coming years.
