Brown Pinas is ready to amaze martial arts fans again when he steps into the cage for his third appearance in ONE Championship.
The 26-year-old will face off against Bangpleenoi Petchyindee Academy at ONE: HERO’S ASCENT in Manila, Philippines on Friday, 25 January in a match of elite Muay Thai featherweights.
The Dutchman is riding high after one of the knockouts of 2018 over Yohann Fairtex Drai at ONE: WARRIOR’S DREAM in November, and he feels much more confident after picking up his first win in The Home Of Martial Arts.
However, the man from Rotterdam knows he cannot be complacent in ONE Super Series. The level of opposition is high, so he made sure to keep his celebrations to a minimum before he got right back in the gym.
“I feel really good,” Pinas says. “That was a good fight, and I won with a knockout, so I am pleased.
“As soon as I came home, I started training again right away. I didn’t want to celebrate too long, I had to focus again.”
His debut in the world’s largest martial arts organization saw him face off against Lumpinee and Rajadamnern Stadium Muay Thai World Champion Chamuaktong Fightermuaythai on just 10 days’ notice at ONE: REIGN OF KINGS in July.
The 26-year-old came up short in a close contest, but that battle has helped to prepare him for Bangpleenoi.
“I don’t know Bangpleenoi too well yet, but I know all the Thai fighters are good – they’re fast and smart,” Pinas explains.
“The Thais like to clinch and kick much more, and Bangpleenoi is like that too, he’s very strong in the clinch.”
Along with that three-round contest, he spent an extended period in Thailand last year, during which he competed in Bangkok.
That has given him even more beneficial experience ahead of his bout with the Petchyindee Academy representative.
“It’s really different when you face [Thais]. They want to do more clinch than the European guys, who have more of a kickboxing style,” he adds.
“It’s their special weapon, but I am more used to a Thai style because of the fights I had in Thailand.”
Pinas spent time training at the renowned Phuket Top Team when he was in The Land Of Smiles in 2018.
While he was there, he drew on the expertise from the coaches and training partners, including fellow ONE competitor Lerdsila Phuket Top Team, and this knowledge will be invaluable when he comes up against Bangpleenoi’s technical Muay Femur style.
Now armed with knowledge from the gym and the ring, Pinas is relaxed and confident he can get his hand raised again in Manila.
Bangpleenoi has never competed outside of Thailand, and the bulk of his contests have come against his countrymen, so the man from the Netherlands believes his unique style will give his rival a ton of problems.
He says his key to overcoming the two-division WMC Muay Thai World Champion is to follow the game plan from his coaches at ARJ Trainingen in Den Haag, which should open up some opportunities to land a jaw-dropping knockout blow.
It worked well for him in his last outing, and Pinas believes he can showcase even more of his offensive armory on Friday night.
“I looked a little bit at his fights, but I never do too much,” Pinas says.
“I let my manager watch, and we think about it, make a game plan, and then we go for it.
“Last time nobody expected that KO, but it came really fast. I have many, many weapons, and that’s what I will show again.”
