Joel Camilleri won the WBC Australasia Super Welterweight title with a unanimous points decision against defiant challenger Luke Woods in Brisbane, Australia, on May 15.

Camilleri (21 wins 6 loses) had to extract all his class to outscore Woods who sustained a solid wall of defense throughout the 10 rounds championship.

“Luke Woods was hard to beat. He’s got a good defence and very awkward.”

While the three judges had mixed scores, the consensus was that Camilleri won 7 of the 10 rounds contest.

Camilleri is renowned for his unconventional boxing style who foils opponents with rapid body movement and darting punches.

The former WBC Asia and Australian national titleholder will use his WBC Australasia regional belt to move up the world rankings, as he turns his focus upon an international campaign, once scheduled flights to resume after the pandemic.

It was Camilleri’s third successive win since losing to world contender Tim Tszyu in May 2019.

Tszyu who was present ringside for the sold-out Ace Boxing Group promotion praised Camilleri as a “solid quality boxer.”

“I have a huge respect for Joel Camilleri,” he said.
