According to ESPN, the original one-year suspension was reduced thanks to Canelo’s cooperation. Brett Okamoto has pictures of the settlement.
NSAC has suspended Canelo Alvarez for six months for his positive tests of clenbuterol. Canelo admitted to it being in system, but maintains it was due to tainted beef. Here are a few pages of the settlement agreement. He’s eligible again on Aug. 17.
Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KO) officially withdrew on April 3rd, kicking off a mad scramble to find a new Golovkin opponent that ultimately concluded with Vanes Martirosyan. Meaning no offense to Martirosyan, but he is terribly unlikely to jeopardize the rematch.
In all honesty, though, I would infinitely prefer Golovkin fight one of his many mandatories, which include Ryota Murata, Sergiy Derevyanchenko, and the winner of the upcoming bout between Jermall Charlo and Hugo Centeno Jr. As much as I love the “Big Drama Show,” I’m kinda tired of the part that takes place outside the ring.
