As Canelo Alvarez begins preparations to rematch Gennady Golovkin on September 15th the Mexican star denies that his previous failed drug tests for clenbuterol were an attempt to gain any competitive edge, but he does say that it was his fault for not understanding the inherent risks eating beef in his native country.

From ESPN:

“I don’t want to get anyone else involved. This was my mistake for not reading up on the risks, not researching more, more on the subject, on what’s going on with the beef in Mexico,” Alvarez said.

“But I didn’t do anything intentionally. I didn’t do anything to try to enhance my performance. I would never do anything like that. It was a mistake and nothing more, not educating myself about this problem in Mexico. It was my mistake, and I won’t repeat it.”

Canelo has take a bit of a beating in the court of public opinion over the failed drug tests but says that in order to ensure that there won’t be any recurrence he’s being extremely careful about what he eats, going so far as to cut beef out of his diet altogether.

And as far as Gennady Golovkin and his team goes, consistently ridiculing Canelo over what he contends was just an innocent mistake, Canelo says he believes Team Golovkin knows they are going to lose this September rematch and are just trying to build in an excuse to rationalize it.
