Canelo-Golovkin rematch discussions to begin soon

Talks for a rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin are expected to begin.

Reps for Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin will begin discussions for a rematch this week, according to a report at ESPN.com.

Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KO) and Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KO) fought to a draw this past Saturday night, a highly controversial outcome. The vast majority of BLH voters scored the fight for Golovkin.

Both sides are open to the rematch, at least on the record, and Canelo has a contractual rematch clause he can exercise in the next three weeks.

Canelo reportedly does not want to fight again until May 5, 2018, and Golovkin’s side are open to that, but there remains a chance that GGG will return in December, perhaps for a fight on December 2 against Miguel Cotto. It depends on whether or not Canelo’s side quickly commits to a May 5 rematch.

Financially, it makes sense to wait until Cinco De Mayo, a traditional big fight weekend, to put on what could be the biggest fight of 2018, barring perhaps the chance of Floyd Mayweather coming back again. But it is a fairly long break, and if Alvarez and Golden Boy won’t sign off right away, it’s certainly understandable that Golovkin and Tom Loeffler wouldn’t want to risk the fight not happening, leaving Golovkin sidelined.
