Saul Canelo Alvarez says he now has the blueprint to defeat Gennady Golovkin from the last fight against him on September 16. Canelo (49-1-2, 34 KOs) plans on using what he learned from that fight on the 36-year-old Golovkin in their rematch on September 15 on HBO pay-per-view at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Canelo, 27, is currently in the process of trimming down and working on his hand speed. He made the mistake of bulking up against Golovkin last September, and it caused him to lose energy after round two. Canelo was still able to steal many of the rounds by showing brief bursts of energy in the first 45 seconds of each round, but he was missing in action after the short bursts and outworked over long stretches by the better conditioned Golovkin.

“The last fight gave us the blueprint for this rematch,” Canelo said via RingTV.“We don’t necessarily have to change the strategy; we just have to add to what we did. We have to throw more punches in every round. We need to do that to remove any doubts about the victory.”

Canelo will probably look to win rounds by throwing bursts of punches, and then getting away from GGG before he has a chance to return fire with his harder shots. Canelo has the better hand speed, and he’ll try to hit Golovkin with judge-pleasing combos and then scatter to the wind to keep from getting caught in an energy-draining war. Canelo doesn’t have the stamina to stand and fight Golovkin for three minutes of each round. Canelo won’t even try to fight Golovkin like that, because it would lead to exhaustion and failure for the Mexican star. He has to fight in the same Floyd Mayweather Jr. hit and run style that he used in the first fight with Golovkin for him to have a chance of beating him. It would be helpful for Canelo if Golovkin stays on the outside like he did in the first fight so that he can run to his left or right after he throws his speedy combination punches.

Canelo did an admirable job of making Golovkin miss with his punches last time. However, Golovkin was too selective in waiting for the right movement to throw his punches for fear of missing and getting countered in return. If Golovkin fights like this again, it’ll be hard for him to defeat Canelo. He’s got to be a lot busier than he was last time. But if Golovkin is able to trap Canelo and make him fight in the trenches, then it won’t end will for the Golden Boy star. He’ll wind up like many of Golovkin’s previous knockout victims. Canelo doesn’t have the greatest chin. What makes him good is he makes guys miss with their shots, causing them to take power off their punches in order for them to and. If Golovkin is able to hit Canelo on the button with full force, the fight will end as quickly as his other fights.

Canelo understands that he’s not going to be able to hurt Golovkin with his shots. Canelo won’t want to come after Golovkin and fight him in a sustained attack because that would lead to him getting damaged by the stronger, sturdier and better conditioned Golovkin. Canelo is younger than Golovkin by nine years, but his cardiovascular system and punching power is inferior to his. Canelo wasn’t made for sustained athletic activity. He was built for short bursts of energy followed by a long period of recovery. Canelo is like a Cheetah in the respect. Those cats are only capable of short bursts of speed before they run out of gas and need to rest. If Golovkin can stay on top of the Cheetah-like Canelo and not let him get his rest breaks, the fight is going to be over with quickly on September 15.
