Canelo: If Mayweather is angry about my DAZN deal, it’s his problem

By Logan Garcia: Saul Canelo Alvarez has taken note of Floyd Mayweather Jr’s comments on social media about his new deal with DAZN, and he sees that as his own personal problem.

Mayweather fired off some vicious comments on his Instagram this week, reminding boxing fans of his win over Canelo Alvarez in 2013, and saying that he makes as much money per fight than the $365 million deal that Canelo (50-1-2, 34 KOs) was given for his 5-year deal with DAZN. Mayweather’s comments made him look like an envious, jealous and person who can’t stand seeing someone else enjoying success.

“I’m not the type of person that will be talking about other fighters, especially on social media” Canelo said to Fight News. “That’s not a good thing. It’s disrespectful, but that’s the way he is. If he’s salty about my new deal with DAZN then that’s his problem,” Canelo said.

Canelo is the draw, and he can pick and choose who he wants to fight at 154, 160 or 168. Gennady Golovkin is an option for Canelo in a third fight in 2019 as long as the Kazakhstan fighter is reasonable in his asking price. If GGG prices himself out, he’s not going to get a third fight with Canelo. Things are going to be a lot different in the negotiations for a third fight. GGG will need to accept a lot less than he received for his last fight, and possibly even his first fight against Canelo for him to get the fight.

Mayweather was never given a $365 million contract like the one that Canelo received. Canelo’s contract is the biggest one in the history of athletics, and this is just the beginning. Canelo is only 28, and he could wind up as boxing’s first billion dollar athlete. Mayweather can make good money against the MMA fighters that be pools from the UFC rankings, but obviously he’s done as far as boxing goes. Mayweather doesn’t have enough left for him to beat the top fighters from 147 and 154 in boxing.

Canelo is offering Mayweather a fight against him at 160 if he wants to fight him, but he doubts he’ll do it. Mayweather beat Canelo when he was only 22, but he hasn’t said anything about wanting to fight him ever since he hit his stride and came into the prime of his career. DAZN signing Canelo is a game-changer for the company. With Canelo on board with DAZN, it’s going to take the company to the next level in bringing other fighters to the company to sign on with them.

“Maybe he wants to fight again,” Canelo said. “All he has to do is come directly to me and we can make the fight happen. There no problem, but I won’t say anything derogatory about him on social media. Each fighter has their own careers and their own life. We know how he is, so it doesn’t surprise me what he said or posted on Twitter,” Canelo said.

Mayweather wants to fight again, but not against Canelo. Mayweather is trying to get UFC lightweight champio Khabib Nurmagomedov to fight him in early 2019, and then a rematch against Conor McGregor.
