Canelo-Jacobs headed to T-Mobile Arena

Canelo Alvarez will fight for the fifth time at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena on May 4, when he takes on Daniel Jacobs in a highly-anticipated middleweight title unification bout.

Alvarez (51-1-2, 35 KO) has gone 3-0-1 at the young venue since it opened in 2016, beginning with his knockout of Amir Khan in the first boxing event at the venue in May 2016, a month after the opening. Both of his fights with Gennady Golovkin — a controversial draw and a debated win — were held at the venue, as was his forgettable fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in May 2017.

Canelo’s last fight came on Dec. 15 at New York’s Madison Square Garden, an easy win over Rocky Fielding. That was also Alvarez’s first fight on DAZN. The fight with Jacobs, which is much bigger and on a traditional big fight weekend, should give us a clearer vision of what DAZN can expect Alvarez to bring in as far as subscribers.

Jacobs (35-2, 29 KO) hasn’t fought in Las Vegas for a long time. In fact, you have to go back to 2010, when the young fighter and top prospect then known as “The Golden Child” was stopped by Dmitry Pirog, a big upset at the time. Since then, he’s beaten cancer, his nickname has changed to “The Miracle Man,” and he’s emerged as what he was expected to be all along, one of the top middleweights in boxing.

Jacobs has won three straight fights, beating Luis Arias, Maciej Sulecki, and Sergiy Derevyanchenko after a tight loss to Golovkin in March 2017.
