When last seen gloving up, Tureano Johnson took an L against Sergiy Derevyanchenko in September of 2017. That’s no severe scarlet letter for the Bahamian to wear, being that we all saw how well Sergiy acquitted himself against Danny Jacobs last weekend.
The 34-year-old hitter will seek to get back on the winning track when he scraps on Dec. 15 at Madison Square Garden, against Canadian power man David Lemieux.
They will do a middleweight faceoff underneath a Canelo Alvarez vs Rocky Fielding 168-pound contest. The matches will be presented on DAZN streaming service.
Johnson owns a 20-2 mark, and has 14 KOs to his credit. BLH chatted with him, and checked in, seeing what he’s been up to during his time away from active service.
“I can’t complain. My faith has taught me, nothing happens before its time. I’ve been training really hard as of late. In camp with Danny Jacobs was a blessing. Prior to camp with Jacobs I’ve been preparing for a bout back home in the Bahamas that never came off the ground.”
And how his head?
“Eager to get into the ring since my loss against the oh so technical Sergiy. Injuring myself in that fight was only part of my problem in that bout. Since then, I’ve changed coaches. I now work with Andre Rozier, who trained both Danny and Sergiy. Also another coach who’s known me from my amateur years, coach Isidoro Nicolas of Cuba.”
The injury he refers to is a ruptured left bicep, for the record. You can see the bicep puffed up after ripping late, so yes, give Tureano extra points for toughness. He was still there banging in round 12 when a flurry finished him.
He says we shouldn’t worry about him being 34, too. “David vs Tureano is a hell of an action packed fight! I know this a fight Tureano has wanted for a long time. Excuse me for using third party talk!”
