Canelo vs Golovkin II: Munguia, Chocolatito, Lemieux-O’Sullivan possible for undercard

ESPN reports that the Canelo-Golovkin II pay-per-view undercard is being worked on right now, and that Golden Boy president Eric Gomez says it should be completed in “about 10 days.”

The fights being reported right now are:

• Jaime Munguia in a junior middleweight title defense
• Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez attempting to come back from two straight losses
• David Lemieux vs Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan in a middleweight bout

Munguia (30-0, 25 KO) won the WBO junior middleweight title on May 12, demolishing Sadam Ali in an HBO main event. He returned on July 21, beating Liam Smith by unanimous decision in a solid first title defense.

Munguia, 21, coming back in just two months would indicate he probably wouldn’t be facing any sort of top-tier contender, and that probably will sit fine with most, as it’s clear that even Munguia understands he has some fine-tuning to do with his game.

Gonzalez (46-2, 38 KO) has back-to-back losses to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, including a brutal KO last September. The 31-year-old Nicaraguan may well still be a top fighter at 115 pounds, and it could simply be that Srisaket is a horrible style matchup for him. Or he could be dunzo, but we’d have to see that in another fight.

Lemieux (39-4, 33 KO) is a former titleholder and veteran contender at 160, but it was thought that he was finally moving up after missing weight for a win over Karim Achour in May. Perhaps a catchweight north of 160 but south of 168 would work for a fight with O’Sullivan (28-2, 20 KO), or maybe it’d just be a straight 160 fight. After all, Lemieux has avoided moving up with weight issues in the past. The sure thing, I think, is that Lemieux-O’Sullivan should make for a fun scrap, of not exactly a marquee matchup.
