Atlantic City’s Young (21-2, 8 KO) started fast in this one, coming out and putting pressure on Ali (27-3, 14 KO) from the get-go, connecting on some good power shots in the first round, and controlling the pace and action of the fight.
Young hurt Ali with a body shot in the third round and just kept connecting on power punches, eventually leading referee Robert Byrd no choice but to step in and stop the fight at 2:38 of the third round, as Ali just wasn’t fighting back enough and wasn’t competitive.

It’s an absolutely huge loss for the 30-year-old Ali, who’s been a pro for a decade and looks like his best days are behind him, but a massive win for the 31-year-old Young, who took up boxing when he was 19 and didn’t have near the amateur career that Ali did.
“I just wanted to let the welterweight division know I’m a real player,” Young said after the fight. “Stopping him in the fashion I did — I just want to let everyone know at 147, I’m here.”
