Irish star Katie Taylor retained her WBA and IBF lightweight titles with a shutout win over super featherweight titleholder Eva Wahlstrom tonight at Madison Square Garden, winning on scores of 100-90 across the board, which is the same score BLH had.
Taylor (12-0, 5 KO) dominated the fight from the get-go, coming out aggressively in the opening round and just outclassing Wahlstrom (22-1-1, 3 KO) in every round, showing more power, better hand speed, and great technique, which is why she also repeatedly beat Wahlstrom in the amateur ranks.
Wahlstrom was cut on a clash of heads late in the fight, but fought through it as Taylor fought as if she wanted a stoppage in the ninth and 10th rounds. That didn’t come, but it was clear that Taylor won every round.
Taylor said her goal is to become undisputed champion at lightweight, and also specifically called out Amanda Serrano, who currently holds the WBO junior welterweight title but has traveled throughout the weight classes in her career, and could be a pretty big opponent for a fight in New York.
According to the punch stats, Taylor landed 133 of 395 (34%) total punches, and 128 of 303 (42%) of her power shots. Wahlstrom managed just 70 of 297 (24%) total punches landing, and 64 of 245 (26%) power shots.
