Joseph Diaz Jr stayed undefeated tonight with a one-sided win over Andrew Cancio, stopping Cancio in the ninth round after dominating every minute of the fight beforehand, and leaving both his and his opponent’s trunks stained with his opponent’s blood.
Diaz (22-0, 13 KO) never had Cancio (17-4, 13 KO) in any serious danger of going down or being knocked out, but he was deadly accurate with both hands in this fight, and sliced Cancio up enough that the corner decided to stop the fight. Official time was 2:27 of round nine. BLH had the fight 80-72 for Diaz at the time of the stoppage, and it was arguably not even that close.
Diaz, 23, is likely closing in on a featherweight title shot as soon as there’s a good opportunity for him. The former U.S. Olympian has shown nice skills as a pro and is a legit top prospect.
Diaz landed 230 of 492 (47%) of his power shots, compared to a mere 52 of 366 (14%) for Cancio. Diaz also out-jabbed Cancio, 38-2 (not a typo), and landed a whopping 59% of his power shots (192/326). Cancio landed just 17% (50/303) of his.
