Former Thai world champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai is set to fight a rematch against Mexican former champ Carlos Cuadras for the vacant WBC super flyweight world title on Saturday, February 5, at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona, fans wondering who will beat who?
The hot fight is promoted by Matchroom Boxing live on DAZN.
Sor Rungvisai vs Cuadras is a rematch between former world champions. The first time they battled each other the winner turned out to be the Mexican in 2014.
So now Cuadras will try to repeat the same win so as to recover his status of world champion, so an attractive and exciting fight is expected.
The “Prince” Cuadras fights for his throne.
The Sinaloan boxer Carlos Cuadras has been training with great motivation in the high elevation mountains of the Otomí Training Center for the crucial fight in Arizona.
The Mexican boxer is sure to repeat another victory over the tough Thailand warrior, recalling that it was in the distant year 2014 in Mexico City, when he managed to win by way of technical decision in eight rounds.
That 2014 fight was stopped by a bad cut on one of his eyebrows. The judges’ scores favored Cuadras so he claimed the championship, which is again at stake.
After almost 7 years of that confrontation, Cuadras and Sor Rungvisai will see each other’s faces again, botk nowing the combat will be a tough war.
“The Thai Sor Rungvisai is a boxer who has a power punch. Of the boxers with strong punch, the one with more power is him.
“I know how he fights. He relies a lot on his punch and strength.
“I have to be careful with that and also with the headers, because many times he comes head first,” admitted Carlos Cuadras.
There is more than just the WBC crown at stake for Rungvisai (50-5-1 43 KOs) and Cuadras (39-4-1 27 KOs) because the winner will likely face the winner of the March clash between Juan Francisco Estrada. and Román ‘Chocolatito’ González, setting up more fireworks in the always exciting 115-pound division.
The Mexican from Guamuchil, Sinaloa, is having good training seasons, so he will arrive with a lot of gasoline in his tank for the fight.
Cuadras needs to arrive in Arizona in the best physical shape.
“Since October we have been on the Otomí Training Center. There were fight cancellations so the pace of training slowed down.
“But I didn’t stop training. Now I have four weeks training hard with coach Manuel López, who knows me and I know him,” explained Cuadras.
Sor Rungvisai will enter world combat after three wins in Thailand after his clash with Estrada.
Victory in the rematch in Phoenix would see the 35-year-old Thai fighter win the green and gold strap for the third time, nearly 9 years since he first conquered that crown.
Cuadras ended Rungvisai’s reign on that occasion, and the Mexican made six title defenses before Chocolatito Gonzalez took the crown in California in September 2016.
It is the second time that the 33-year-old Cuadras has attempted to regain the throne.
In his last battle for the belt, Cuadras knocked down defending champion Estrada in the 3rd round, but the champion Estrada prevailed in Mexico in October 2020.
Two weeks before such an important fight, Carlos Cuadras does not have any type of distraction.
But he did recognises that in order to become world champion again, he will have to make an almost perfect fight.
“There is no problem in training.
“At the thirty-day pre-weigh-in, I weighed-in at 57.20 kilos (the super flyweight limit is 52.16 kg).
“I close to making weight, so we will get to the fight with strength, not tired and dehydrated.
“We also take great care of every aspect of the fight” promises Cuadras.
