CDO BOXERS OVER-ALL CHAMP IN BATANG PINOY MINDANAO FINALS

OROQUIETA City, Misamis Occidental –- Early favorite Cagayan de Oro City won five gold medals to emerge as the over-all champion in boxing in the Batang Pinoy Mindanao Finals last Sunday at the Misamis Occidental Capitol basketball court.
The CDO boxers of Mayor Oscar Moreno also took four silvers in the grassroots development program sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission and hosted by the Province of Misamis Occidental and Oroquieta City.
Thirteen-year old Angelou Lofranco gave the first gold for CDO via a convincing unanimous decision over Zamboanga’s Marlon Luna in the School Boys Mosquito (38 kg) division.
Eljay Pamisa, a 13-year old nephew of head coach Elmer Pamisa won the second gold via a referee-stopped-contest over 15-year old Rene Boy Atam of Koronadal City in1:33 of Round 2 of the School Boys light paperweight (40 kg.) category.
CDO’s third gold medal was also won by a RSC in Round 1 by 13-year old Rhein John Gidor against Iligan’s Eljohn Anor in the School Boys Light pinweight (44 kg.) category.
Fifeen-year old Ailene Kaye Caranagan used his reach advantage and constant jab straights to outclass Agusan del Sur’s Mythel Ivan Leigh Kate Pilapil by a convincing 5-0 victory in the Junior Girls flyweight (50 kg.) event.
Joshua Jan Obvina, 15, landed solid punches to earn CDO’s fifth and final gold medal also by a 5-0 win over Gen. Santos City’s Keven Diodor in the Jr. Boys light bantamweight (52 kg.) division.
“Nagpapasalamat ako sa aking mga boxers na nag training nang mabuti para makamit po nila ang ginto sa finals. At sa mga natalo naman mag training nang mabuti upang maka bawi sa sunod , “ said coach Pamisa.
He also thanked CDO Mayor Oscar Moreno for his undying support to the team.
“Malaking pasalamat namin kay Mayor Oscar Moreno sa kanyang walang sawang pagtulong sa mga kabataang mahilig sa larong boxing,” added Pamisa.
General Santos City finished over-all second with three golds, one silver and four bronzes followed by South Cotabato (2-0-3), Davao City (1-3-4), Kidapawan (1-0-3), Agusan del Sur (1-0-3), Panabo (1-0-1), Zamboanga (0-1-2), Iligan (0-2-0), Koronadal (0-1-4).
Gensan got its three golds from Rederick Bautista (School Boys mosquito 34-36 kg.), Gabriel dela Pena (Jr. Boys pinweight 44-46 kg.) and Nelson Marc Ciudad (Jr. Boys featherweight 57 kg.).
Fourteen-year old Hazel Grace Catalbas, a Grade 8 student of South Cotabato countered with more solid punches to stop Agusan’s Rofamae Frondoza in 37 seconds of Round 1 in the Jr. Girls pinweight (44-46 kg.).
Frondoza of Santa Josefa started strong by throwing her left-right jabs but was also hurt by a solid hook by Catalbas.
Five-foot-8 Rosie Jay Kadusale, 14, of Agusan used her long jabs with body shots against Gensan’s Bernadeth Masalon to score a RSC in 1:40 of Round 1in the Jr. Girls light flyweight (48 kg.).
The medals were awarded by PSC Commissioners Ramon Fernandez, Arnold Agustin and Celia Kiram together with Misamis Occidental Gov. Herminia Ramiro. All the medalists will advance into the Batang Pinoy National Finals slated in Baguio City.
