Charlie Edwards: ‘I want to be a British great’

With Charlie Edwards set to make his first WBC flyweight title defense on March 23 in London, when he’ll face Spain’s Angel Moreno at Copper Box Arena, the titleholder says he aims to become a “British great.”

Edwards (14-1, 6 KO) upset Cristofer Rosales to win the title on Dec. 22 on the Whyte-Chisora II undercard, and now he has his sights set on big things for the future:

“I want to be a British great, and to be a British great I want to be a multi-weight world champion, and this new book, it starts now. … I want to go down as a great, and this first defence is going to be a really good one. I’m really looking forward, and excited about this fight. Angel Moreno is a very good fighter.”

Moreno (19-2-2, 6 KO) has fought almost all his fights at home in Spain, but he has fought twice outside of his native country. Unfortunately for Moreno, those trips abroad have resulted in his only two losses, to Artem Dalakian in Ukraine in 2015 and Thomas Masson in 2016 in France. He has won nine straight, but eight of those were in six-round fights, and all of them were against poor opposition, so Edwards will be a heavy favorite in this fight.
