Charlie Edwards surprised a lot of people when he beat Cristofer Rosales to win the WBC flyweight title in London, and now the 25-year-old champion is looking ahead for what’s next.
Edwards (14-1, 6 KO) says he wants a fight with WBA “world” super flyweight titleholder Kal Yafai (25-0, 15 KO), which would be a big fight for both in the United Kingdom, but he doesn’t expect Yafai wants to go next.
“It could be next, because I would have it next, but I know he won’t, so it probably won’t be next. I don’t think he wants to entertain me at all. He made that pretty clear during the year when I was trying to call for the fight.”
He also knows he may have to face Rosales (28-4, 19 KO) in a rematch, but is confident he’ll do even better if they square off again:
“I’ve got his rhythm, I’ve got his range, he can’t outbox me. The only thing he can do is try and press me harder. When he presses me harder, that just opens more openings to hit him.”
Whatever winds up being next for Edwards, 2019 is set to be the biggest year of his young career.
