As Chris Eubank Jr. prepares for his IBO super middleweight title fight against Renold Quinlan, he insists that he’ll be preparing himself, without the need of a formal trainer. Eubank Jr. has worked with Ronnie Davies, Adam Booth, and Maximo Pierret in recent years, but with neither of them proving sufficient for Jr., he’ll mostly go it alone.
“I don’t need somebody to push me or tell me what to do, Ronnie will put the sparring together, but I know what to do now, after years of training and learning what your body does.
“The main thing is sparring. There is no one telling me that I have to do this many rounds on the bag, ‘You have to skip for this long, run this far.’ That is all set by me because I know myself.”
Perhaps for this particular fight Eubank Jr. training himself won’t be such a big deal, considering the talent disparity between he and Quinlan, but I can’t help but think of the saying about the doctor who has himself as a patient…It usually doesn’t work out so well in the end.
And considering that Adam Booth is generally a well-respected trainer, it’s at least a little surprising that the pair didn’t work out. But as Jr. says:
“We tried Adam Booth. He is a good trainer, but outside of the ring there were things we were not happy with.”
So although Jr. will be guiding his own training camp, which he says done for a while now, he does admit that he could change course later in the year. And if he’s geninuely serious about facing Gennady Golovkin one day, that’ll probably be a good idea.
