Talented Olympian Claressa Shields, who triumphed in the amateur sphere, is now determined to reach the zenith of the professional ranks.
Claressa Shields, born on March 17, 1995, debuted as pro on November 19, winning by unanimous decision over Franchon Crews. Prior to this, in May 2012, she had qualified to compete in the Olympic Games and struck gold. At that time, Claressa was the youngest boxer in the competition.
As an amateur, she built an impressive 77-1 amateur record, winning two Olympic medals and the Val Barker Trophy, as the best “pound-for-pound” boxer there.
Originally from Flint, Michigan, Claressa discovered her passion for boxing thanks to former world champion Laila Ali. However, when she told her Father about her ambitions and aspirations he opposed it, because he mistakenly considered that boxing was exclusively for men.
This all changed thanks to Claressa`s wise Grandmother, who always encouraged and supported her . Convinced of her talent and her destiny , eleven years old Claressa persuaded her Father, that this was indeed her path to glory.
Claressa`s next ambition, is to become WBC champion in a not-too-distant future. However, this young boxer knows and appreciates that the first step is to conquer the NABF belt in the middleweight division, against Szilvia Szabados on March 10 at MGM Grand Detroit in Michigan. Her Hungarian rival is well known, as a tough competitor and a gritty contender with a respectable record of 15 victories, 6 KO´s and 8 losses.
