Female super middleweight star Claressa Shields (3-0, 1 KO) held her media day workout on Monday at the Kronk Gym in Detroit. Shields is preparing for her WBC and IBF world championship fight against defending champ Nikki Alder (16-0, 9 KOs) on August 4.
Also, at the media workout, WBC Silver champ Shields and promoter Dmitry Salita were presented with the Spirit of Detroit award from the Detroit City Council.
Claressa’s thoughts on her upcoming fight against Nikki Adler:
“I am more excited to fight a girl who is 16-0. She is the world champ, been the world champ for three or four years. I am excited. I am not worried at all. I hope she is training good.”
On critics telling her that this fight is too big of a step up:
“Everybody says, ‘I’m not ready.’ I’m just ready to prove the naysayers wrong. I’ve been the best in the world for a long time. Not just in the amateurs, but in my mind.
“For women’s boxing, it will show we are in a new time zone. We are not in the old time zone, where great fighters lose.”
What impresses her about Nikki Adler:
“I admire she has been on top for a long time. It’s hard to do. People always make it to the top and fall off. I have seen it done hundreds and hundreds of times. Just because she has been a world champ for so many years, she has something in her. It’s the same thing that makes her not want to lose. But, I feel like I have more of that in me.”
Prediction on the fight:
“It’s going to end early. I don’t believe in losing. I am going to give Nikki Adler everything I’ve got to win those belts.”
