Two-time Olympic gold medal winner Claressa Shields has chosen Dmitriy Salita to be her promoter as she continues her journey from amateur stardom to professional world-title contention.

Shields (2-0, 1 knockout) will take on Mery Rancier (7-8-3, 5 KOs) in an eight-round bout this Friday at the Masonic Temple in Detroit as part of Salita’s popular “Detroit Brawl” series. This will be Shields’ second consecutive bout with Salita at the helm as promoter. This past March Shields became the first female boxer to headline a card on premium cable (Showtime) when she stopped Szivia Szabados in the fourth round in front of friends and family at the MGM Theatre in Detroit.

The pairing with former world title challenger Salita makes sense in many ways as the New Yorker regularly promotes fight cards in Detroit, which is about an hour’s drive south of Shields’ home of Flint, Michigan.

“The state of Michigan has been home to many, like Joe Louis, Tommy Hearns, Floyd Mayweather and now Claressa Shields,” Salita said. “I look forward to working with Claressa on her already historic career. At only 22 years old I believe Claressa will continue to break records, set new limits and break boundaries in and out of the ring.”

Shields has grown accustom to performing on large stages as she made her debut on the undercard of the highly anticipated Andre Ward-Sergey Kovalev championship bout in Las Vegas last November. Shields won a unanimous decision against longtime rival Franchon Crews.

Since turning pro Shields has made it a point to work her way to a world title shot and now Salita is tasked with helping guide her on the journey.

Shields dominated women’s amateur boxing posting a record of 77-1 and capturing gold at the 2012 London Games and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. The feat was a first for an American boxer both male and female.

Life has changed for Shields since capturing her second consecutive gold medal last summer. Recently it was announced that Shields has been nominated for a Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Award and hall of famer Tommy Hearns paid a visit to watch her workout in camp.
