It’s been almost six years since former UFC champion Conor McGregor and reigning UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway threw down inside Boston’s TD Garden. Yet, the two pugilists refuse to let their past rivalry die.
Over the weekend, while McGregor celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago and served as the Boston Bruin’s hype man ahead of their game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, the proud Irishman took a moment to reflect on past glory he’s shared with the city of Boston.
Taking to his Twitter, McGregor strolled down memory lane to his 2013 win over a 21-year-old Holloway.

During that scrap, which marked McGregor’s second bout inside the Octagon, the man known as “Notorious’” earned the decision over the young Hawaiian, but suffered a torn ACL in the process.
While the tweet was made in jest, it wouldn’t take long for Holloway, who’s rattled off 13 straight wins since coming up short to McGregor, to clap back with his own seven-tweet response.

But in classic McGregor fashion, he refused to let the Twitter sparring end there.

Too bad Holloway refused to let his Irish rival have the final say as he clapped right back before laying down the gauntlet for a July rematch.

In terms of actual competition, Holloway (20-3) is currently slated to jump up in weight to battle Dustin Poirier for a vacant interim lightweight title at UFC 236 in April, with the winner expected to face champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at a later date.
Holloway successfully defended his featherweight crown with a fourth round TKO over Brian Ortega in his most recent outing at UFC 231 in December.
McGregor (21-4) is coming off of a fourth-round submission loss to Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in October. That marked his first bout inside the Octagon since winning the lightweight title with a TKO of Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in November 2016. The UFC would later strip McGregor of his featherweight and lightweight titles due to inactivity.
