Things have gone from bad to worse for Irish UFC star Conor McGregor, as ‘The Notorious’ has been charged with ‘three counts of assault and one count of criminal mischief’, according to MMA Fighting’s Peter Carroll. SBG Ireland teammate and friend, Cian Cowley, was also charged with one count of assault and one count of criminal mischief.
McGregor, who is expected to be stripped of the lightweight title, handed himself in to police custody yesterday at the 78th precinct in Brooklyn, New York after his involvement in a wild attack at the UFC 223 media day on Thursday.
McGregor, and a group of friends from Ireland, stormed the UFC 223 media day and attacked a bus transporting fighters from the media conference to the host hotel in Brooklyn. The Dubliner is expected to face his charges in court later today.
The Irishman is recorded throwing a dolly at the front of the bus, which smashed the window and caused injury to UFC fighters Michael Chiesa and Ray Borg. Chisea and Borg, who suffered injuries from the smashed glass, were forced to withdraw from their respective bouts at UFC 223. It’s also reported that a UFC executive suffered a hand injury in the frenzy.
McGregor’s teammate and friend, Artem Lobov, was also said to be involved in the attack, and his UFC 223 preliminary bout with Alex Caceres has been cancelled. It’s speculated that McGregor attacked the bus in retaliation to Khabib Nurmagomedov’s confrontation with Lobov on Wednesday.
Nurmagomedov, 29, was on board the attacked bus but avoided injury. The undefeated Dagestani is still expected to fight reigning featherweight champion Max Holloway for the ‘undisputed’ lightweight title at UFC 223. The PPV extravaganza takes place tomorrow night, April 7 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
