It didn’t take long for Conor McGregor to comment on the UFC 229 main event.
“The Notorious” failed to recapture his lightweight title Saturday in Las Vegas, losing by fourth-round submission to heated rival Khabib Nurmagomedov in one of the most highly-anticipated fights in MMA history. Nurmagomedov’s win was marred by a post-fight brawl that was kicked off by the defending champion climbing out of the Octagon and proceeding to attack McGregor’s cornermen.
Nurmagomedov’s cornermen also got into an altercation with McGregor and by the time the dust settled, Nurmagomedov was being escorted backstage by a large pack of security guards and policemen, and announcer Bruce Buffer was left to read out the official fight result without either headliner present.
McGregor did not make himself available to the media afterwards, but he took to Twitter to issue a short statement on his loss and his plans to fight Nurmagomedov again:
“Good knock,” McGregor wrote. “Looking forward to the rematch.”
McGregor also made a post on Instagram, writing simply: “I’ll be back.”
Whether McGregor intends to make a Nurmagomedov rematch an immediate priority or face the unbeaten Russian at some other point in the future remains to be seen, but judging by his quick response, it’s fair to assume that MMA’s biggest star has already put the gears in motion for his next move.
