Conor McGregor has never lacked for confidence or pomp, and he’s doing everything he can to sell a potential move — one-off or not — to the boxing ring to take on Floyd Mayweather this summer.
A rumored June date is up in the air at the moment, for those who still care about this sort of thing, and even UFC boss Dana White has essentially said that with the money at stake, the fight is basically inevitable.
But on Friday night, with Michael Conlan making his pro debut at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, Ireland’s McGregor was part of the ex-Olympian’s entourage, which is fitting given that Conlan also has little use for a filter.
McGregor stole the headlines with some quotes:
“I’m the boxing guy, watch me take over boxing,” McGregor exclaimed. “No one in this boxing game knows what’s coming, trust me on that one. When I step in (the boxing ring), I’m going to shock the whole goddamn world. Trust me on that. Look me in the eyes — 28 years of age. Confident as a (expletive). Long, rangy. Dangerous with every hand. Trust me. I’m going to stop Floyd. You’re all going to eat your words. The whole word is going to eat their words. I am boxing.”
Right now, it looks like this Mayweather-McGregor fight, whatever you think of it, is going to happen.
Oh, and Conlan, who is a very good pro prospect at 122 pounds, won his fight over Tim Ibarra via third round TKO.
