After his win against Artem Lobov on Saturday, Cub Swanson is gunning for the winner of the Jose Aldo-Max Holloway title fight this June.
Since his UFC stint began in 2011, Cub Swanson has always been among the elite names of the 145-pound division. While he did experience a two-fight skid in 2014 and 2015, he has gotten himself back on track with a four-fight win streak.
On Saturday night in Nashville, Swanson was able to make a stronger case for himself by decisively defeating Conor McGregor’s SBG Dublin teammate Artem Lobov. Now that this assignment is out of the way, he has now set his sights towards the winner of the title fight between Jose Aldo and Max Holloway at UFC 212 on June 3rd.
“I’ve lost to both those guys, so they both equally sting. In my whole career, I’ve never fought for a belt, so that’s something that I would like to do, or at least have the opportunity to do,” Swanson said during a post-fight media scrum (via MMA Fighting).
“For the division, I think it’s exciting for Holloway to win, and just kinda build more buzz. But I think my chances of fighting for a title, it’s more likely if Aldo wins, because then there’s not going to be a rematch (between Aldo and Holloway), things like that. So I see both sides.”
Swanson is also expecting his first child in August, which will keep him sidelined for a while. But he will constantly be in training to be able to get back in action by before the year ends, or by the early part of 2018.
“I’m definitely going to take some time off, but I’m going to be training the whole time. I’ve got good people around,” Swanson said. “I enjoy training at this point in my career. I feel like I’m a lot smarter at it, I enjoy pushing myself, so I’ll be training. But realistically, fighting, probably not until late December or early next year.”
UFC 212 will be taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
