David ‘General’ Cuéllar became the World Boxing Council’s Silver Youth Super Flyweight Champion, defeating Karim ‘Traviesito’ Arce by knockout in nine entertaining rounds.
It was a production of Promociones del Pueblo in association with BXSTRS Promotions and reached all of Latin America through the ‘ESPN Knockout’ signal from the Benito Juárez Auditorium in Los Mochis, Sinaloa.
Cuellar, who is the taller, immediately began to put pressure on Arce, nephew of former world champion Jorge “Travieso” Arce, with long left jabs. The turning point came in the fourth when a short left hook felled Karim for a flash knockdown. But then a much harder right wobbled him and he did well to fight back and survive until the bell.
Karim regrouped well in the fifth and sixth when they were both toe to toe leaning on each other`s shoulder. A left and then a right uppercut wobbled Karim in the seventh but with his nose bleeding in the eighth he himself wobbled “The General” with a terrific short right.
David dealt Karim a Goliath of a left uppercut in the ninth. Stunned from the impact, Karim staggered backward and sagged against them. This prompted the immediate stoppage intervention of Referee Gabriel López,
A great underfire victory for David who had to dig deep. A tremendous and gutsy effort from Karim. For him, it’s a setback, but the courage and fortitude he showed will set him in good stead for the future.
Former world champion José ‘Bolivita’ Uzcátegui won by knockout at 47 seconds of the second round against Jaime ‘Huizi’ Hernández from Nayarit who ended up succumbing to the knuckle power of the Venezuelan living in Tijuana, who with this victory is approaching an eliminatory bout.
