Cynthia Calvillo accepts six-month suspension for marijuana

Cynthia Calvillo’s failed drug test won’t keep her out of competition for long.

The 30-year-old strawweight has accepted a six-month suspension from the USADA after an in-competition drug test came in positive for Carboxy-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — a marijuana metabolite — last December, per a USADA release.

Calvillo’s suspension can be reduced to three months pending completion of a USADA-approved drug awareness and management program.

The test result was collected on Dec. 30, 2017, the same day as Calvillo’s most recent fight at UFC 219 in Las Vegas. At that event, Calvillo lost a unanimous decision to Carla Esparza, the first setback of her seven-fight pro career.

Should Calvillo receive a reduced suspension, she will be eligible to compete again by March 30, or by June 30, under the maximum penalty.

Because the associated bout occurred in Las Vegas, Calvillo could receive further sanctions from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
