As of this posting, the fighting future of UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor remains uncertain. This has led fighters and fans alike to speculate whether or not he would still carry on with his career, given his other ventures outside of fighting and his quadrupled net worth after the Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight last August.
From their end, the UFC is not at all concerned about McGregor’s absence and the possibility of his immediate retirement.
“I always say, ‘If Conor McGregor fights next year, that’ll be awesome. If Conor McGregor doesn’t fight, the UFC is going to go on’” UFC president Dana White recently said on FOX Sports 1’s Undisputed (via Express.co.uk).
“I’ve been hearing this since 2003. ‘What are you going to do when Chuck Liddell’s gone? What are you going to do when Georges St-Pierre leaves? You’re in big trouble when Anderson Silva’s gone.’ And the list goes on and on. Ronda Rousey.”
The UFC does have other big names on the roster, as well as other planned endeavors outside of MMA. Given all of these other options, White remains unfazed about the likelihood that another major superstar of his decides to go another route.
“Last year was the best in the company’s history,” White said. “So we’re going to keep finding new talent and putting on the best fights in the world.”
“That’s what we’re going to continue to do. With or without anybody.”
For his part, McGregor says he plans to return to MMA and take on a “real fight.”
