Daniel Cormier is not willing to delay his rematch with Jon Jones any further.
A rematch has seemingly eluded both Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones. Due to unfortunate circumstances, the two men have failed to face each other a couple of times already in 2016 alone.
In July, “Bones” year-long suspension from a failed drug test at UFC 200 will officially lapse, and he will be reinstated back into the active roster. The promotion has then marked UFC 214 on July 29th as the date for their much-awaited second meeting, but has not been made final since Jones has yet to accept the offer.
Per Dana White’s stipulation, top contender Jimi Manuwa would be facing “DC” if Jones will be unavailable for the said date. But for the current champion, his rematch with Jones should be the next fight for him, or it is never happening at all.
“I stand on take the fight with me, Jon Jones,” Cormier said during Wednesday’s episode of UFC Tonight (via FOX Sports). “There’s no tune up fights in the UFC. If you’re a guy that has dominated the division as he has, why not come back and try to get your title? Come meet your boy, D.C., come get this money. Let’s get money together and give the people in Anaheim a show. No tune up for Jon Jones. He gets to come and get beat by me this time.”
“We’re fighting right now or he doesn’t get to fight me. It’s my rules, I’m the champ now.”
Jones last saw action at UFC 197 against Ovince Saint Preux in April 2016, where he was criticized by many for an unlikely lackluster performance. Cormier feels that same version of his rival will show up when they finally face each other again.
“The person that we saw against Ovince Saint-Preux is the new USADA regulated Jon Jones. He’s always going to look like that. Yes, I will beat him up on July 29.”
UFC 214 is slated to take place in Anaheim, California.
