Danny Garcia wants Shawn Porter; “you got what you ask for”

Danny Garcia says he’s going to give former IBF welterweight champion Showtime Shawn Porter (28-2-1, 1, 17 KOs) what he asked for when he faces him for the vacant World Boxing Council 147-pound title on September 8 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Garcia, 30, says he’s a completely different person when he gets inside the ring for his fights, and he plans on proving it when he faces Porter in their fight on Showtime Championship Boxing on the 8th of September. Porter and Garcia (34-1, 20 KOs) will be scrapping it out for the WBC title that Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman vacated two months ago in June.

“You get what you ask for. I’m a different animal. September 8, I’m bringing that title back to Philadelphia,” Danny Garcia said on his Twitter.

Garcia’s face bruises up easily, and he might be ripe to being cut to ribbons by Porter’s head-butts if he goes into his Billy goat mode like he sometimes does in his fights. Garcia isn’t the same fighter when he starts bleeding from cuts. If Porter can get Garcia bleeding, we could see him taste defeat once again.

Porter has a way of forcing his opponents to go into survival mode against him with the way he storms into them. Garcia will have plenty of opportunities to land his left hooks as Porter is rushing him. However, if Garcia can’t keep Porter off of him once he’s on the inside, it could be a really long night for him. Lamont Peterson gave Garcia problems with his pressure and his inside game in their fight three years ago on April 11, 2015. Garcia squeaked by Peterson, beating him by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores 114-114, 115-113 and 115-113. If Peterson had started pressuring Garcia in the first five rounds, he would have won the fight. Garcia’s inability to handle Peterson’s pressure was troubling. Garcia looked lost against Peterson. Porter is a much better pressure fighter than Porter, and he’s better inside fighter as well with more punching power.

”I hope you’re ready for another instant classic!!! WhatTimeIsIt #2Time #AndNew,” Porter said on his social media site.

Porter looked good in defeating former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto by a 9th round knockout last year on April 22, 2017. In Porter’s last fight against Adrian Granados, he had problems beating him by a 12 round unanimous decision. However, Porter reportedly had a hand injury in that fight. If Porter isn’t 100 percent for the Garcia fight, he could wind up losing Garcia isn’t the type of talent that can be beaten by a fighter not firing on all cylinders. Porter can’t afford to be one-armed when he fights Garcia.

”Danny Swift, I ain’t stupid. You going to meet me in the center of the ring because that’s the only place in the ring you can fight,” Porter said. ”Heaven forbid I start moving. You’ll be trailing me in the ring doing the robot. Step you game up ASAP.”

Porter needs to be ready for the tricks that Garcia has up his sleeves because he’s got a variety of things that he can use to try and beat him. Those things are as follows:

– Clinching/wrestling

– Moving/running

– Throwing low blows

– Jabbing

– Pushing off

– Slugging

Garcia hasn’t shown the ability to hurt true welterweights since moving up to 147 in 2014. The fighters that Garcia has stopped in the last four years at 147 have been less than the best in Samuel Vargas, Paulie Malignaggi, Rod Salka and Brandon Rios. Garcia couldn’t knockout Robert ‘The Ghost’ Guerrero, Lamont Peterson and Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman. Garcia’s punching power didn’t carry up with him from the light welterweight division.

Garcia isn’t the same fighter when he starts brawling. He really struggles when he’s forced into all out wars. It won’t be easy for Garcia to land his bread and butter punch his left hook counter on Porter due to his head movement and speed. Garcia will obviously land his left hook on occasion, but not enough to keep up with the shots that Porter is going to be landing. Garcia’s best chance of winning the fight is if he can hurt Porter like he did Amir Khan and then finish him off. Porter can be hurt. We saw Adrien Broner drop Porter with a left hook in the 12th round of their fight on June 20, 2015. Although Porter won the fight by a 12 round unanimous decision, Broner had him hurt in the 12th.

Brandon Rios gave Garcia problems with his pressure, volume punching and inside game in their fight on November 4, 2017. Garcia stopped Rios with a right hand in the 9h, but he struggled with his pressure and punch output. Porter is a lot quicker than Rios, and a much better inside fighter. Porter is a bigger puncher than Rios.

Garcia-Porter could come down to which of the two fighters is busier. Since Porter has the better work rate of the two, he’s likely going to do the job on Garcia unless he lands a big shot to score a knockout. Garcia isn’t very fast, so he’s probably not going to be able to get the better of Porter when the two of them are exchanging. Porter had problems with Thurman in their fight in 2016. Thurman was backing up and catching Porter with left hooks and right hands to the head. Porter still gave Thurman a lot of problems with the way that he chased after him and prevented him from taking his badly needed rest breaks.

Garcia lacks the cardio to make this a sure thing win over Porter. The pace of the fight will be the key. If Porter can push a fast pace like he normally does, then he’s going to cause Garcia to boil over and exhaust himself. Garcia is also flat-footed, and moves slowly around the ring. He’s a plodder. So if Porter puts pressure on Garcia, he’s going to be stuck fighting it out to try and get him off of him. If Garcia’s tricks don’t work for him, then it could be bad. Those tricks involve throwing low blows, clinching, showing and moving. Those things have worked for Garcia in the past. They might not work against a rough fighter like Porter, who can’t be beaten by low blows or holding.
