One of the largest fighters in the welterweight division, Darren Till’s size got the better of him at Saturday’s weigh-ins for UFC Liverpool.
Till failed to make weight for his main event encounter opposite Stephen Thompson set to take place on Sunday at the Echo Arena in Till’s home city of Liverpool, England. He tipped the scales at 174.5 pounds, 3.5 pounds over the welterweight limit (including a one-pound allowance).
It is unknown whether Till will remain in Sunday’s main event. Thompson successfully made weight, coming in at 171 pounds and will likely receive a portion of Till’s purse should he agree to take the fight.
“Listen, Till called us out! He’s been a bit disrespectful during the course of promoting this fight. We came across the world, into HIS HOME TOWN, in front of HIS PEOPLE, AND WE MAD WEIGHT! Stephen is a fighter and would never want to disappoint the fans (short of illness) and came to fight! His management is working out the details,” Ray Thompson, Stephen Thompson’s father, to MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani.
The 25-year-old Till gave cause for concern before he even showed up, missing the two-hour deadline set for the fighters to weigh in. Officials said that Till was being granted an extra hour due to a family emergency.
