David Allen is set to return to action on Saturday on the Ritson-Patera card in Newcastle, where he’ll face Samir Nebo in a heavyweight fight scheduled for 10 rounds.
But he’s got bigger fish on his mind, too, as he hopes to land a bout with former WBA “world” titleholder Lucas Browne in December.
“He’s old enough to be my dad, but Lucas Browne is a tough, strong, powerful man. I think if the fight happens next, it will be at the right time for me. I’m young, fresh, and I’m coming through. He was the heavyweight champion of the world, but I’m the future, and I think it would be a fantastic fight. I’ll take the Browne fight in December, I’m ready for it. I need to beat Samir Nebo in devastating fashion. The Lucas Browne fight is the one that excites me.”
Allen (14-4-2, 11 KO) is a likable scrapper but appears to have shown his ceiling in past losses to the likes of Dillian Whyte, Luis Ortiz, Lenroy Thomas, and Tony Yoka. It seems unlikely that he’ll ever make it to true world level, but he’s also 26 and heavyweights age differently (better, usually) than lower weight fighters, so who knows?
As for Browne (26-1, 23 KO), he was thrashed in March by Whyte, but has since returned with a win in September over veteran journeyman Julius Long, so he’s not letting that one loss keep him on the sidelines or anything.
Maybe Allen-Browne wouldn’t be a massive marquee fight, but I do think it could be an entertaining one, and a nice addition to any number of cards.
