By Scott Gilfoid: The recently brutally knocked out former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion David Price (22-5, 18 KOs) says he wants a fight against former heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury (26-0, 19 KOs). Price, 34, believes there’s still fans interest in a fight between the two of them despite his career having imploded since his back to back losses to Tony Thompson in 2013.
Price will be looking to bounce back from his 5th round knockout loss to Alexander Povetkin this month when he faces an opponent still to be determined on July 27 at the Bolton Whites Hotel in Bolton, UK.
I doubt that the 6’9” Fury is going to want to take on Price right now. As bad as Fury looked in his recent 4th round knockout of Sefer Seferi, last month on June 9 in Manchester, England. Fury will be fighting next month on August 18 on the Carl Frampton card against an opponent still to be determined at Windsor Park in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Fury is expected to take on another soft touch for his second fight for his comeback. Fury returned from a 2 ½ year layoff to defeat Seferi, but he did not look good. Before that, Fury’s last fight was against former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.
”Definitely would interest me,” said Price to skysports.com. ”You’ve got to look at the risk-reward factor for Tyson Fury, which I’ve spoken to him about anyway. For him to fight me, I’ve lost five times, would he get any credit for beating me? Probably not,”Price said.
Price, 6’8”, punches hard, but he has terrible stamina and his punch resistance isn’t good at all. When Price fades early in his fights, it makes him more susceptible to getting knocked out.
In Price’s last fight against past his prime 38-year-old Alexander Povetkin, he was stopped in the 5th round on the undercard of Anthony Joshua vs. Joseph Parker at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. After briefly hurting Povetkin in the 3rd, Price was knocked out in the 5th. After the fight, Price required 42 stitches to close cuts inside his mouth.
Years ago a lot of boxing fans were interested in seeing Fury and Price face each other, but not anymore. Nowadays no one talks about wanting to see Price and Fury fight. If the fight takes place, it might interest a handful of hardcore boxing fans that remembered Price when he was still at the top of his game.
”I think a lot of people would still like to see the fight,” Price said.
If Fury does choose to fight Price, it’s likely going to take place in 2019 after he;s gotten a few more tune-up fights under his belt. Fury is still too fat right now for him to be fighting Price or anyone of note. Price would be a test for Fury. Right now, that would be a 50-50 affair given how badly Fury looked in his comeback fight. Fury was absolutely horrible against Seferi.
Personally, I wouldn’t want to see Price and Fury fight. It would be too much of a has-been type of fight for it to be appealing.
