De La Hoya: ‘I’m still open to a possible comeback’

Oscar De La Hoya is still kicking around the idea of fighting again.

Golden Boy promoter and former six division champion Oscar De La Hoya maintains that he’s serious about considering a comeback to boxing — if the right fight presented itself. De La Hoya has been talking a lot lately about being back in the gym, working out, feeling strong, and all that jazz, but he was also saying the same things when he said he wanted to come back to fight Gennady Golovkin a couple years back.

Luckily for him, his better judgement won the day on that front.

But here we are again with Oscar De La Hoya floating the idea of a return, even calling out Conor McGregor after publicly ridiculing Floyd Mayweather for making that fight — saying it would kill boxing. Floyd, of course, shot back at his longtime rival by pointing out his hypocrisy, but De La Hoya tells ESPN Deportes that he’s not paying Floyd any mind after saying Floyd ducked out on their rematch all those years ago.

He also says he remains serious about a potential return to the ring.

De La Hoya, 44, has been retired from boxing since a 2008 beating delivered by Manny Pacquiao. That was nearly a decade ago and Oscar looked far past it even then, so it’s hard to believe he’d have much of anything to offer in anything other than a novelty fight. But, who knows, that novelty fight could even end up being against Mayweather himself, and I’d bet it would still sell a ton.

Oh the possibilities…
