De La Hoya: Once Canelo beats Golovkin people will forget about failed drug tests

As the big middleweight rematch looms for September 15th, Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya says he has no concerns about Canelo Alvarez’s legacy being tainted by failed drug tests for clenbuterol. In fact De La Hoya says that with a good showing over Golovkin fans will eventually forget all about it.

”This was Clenbuterol that was in meat, in tainted meat. So, look, everybody in Mexico knows about the big problem they have with Clenbuterol in their meat, and in Mexico he’s a bigger star than ever.

”So I don’t think his career will be tainted whatsoever. I think once he beats Golovkin in a spectacular fashion, then people will forget about it here in the states.”

The stigma attached to athletes who get popped for banned substances can be long lasting, but for some it’s obviously worse than others.

Do you think Canelo’s legacy will be forever tarnished by his positive drug tests, or will that incident eventually fade away in time?
