By Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr. had better get back in the ring and continue fight, because WBC heavyweight champion Deontay ‘Bronze Bomber’ Wilder (39-0, 38 KOs) says he “easily” break the ‘Money’ man’s 50-0 record that he recently set in beating UFC fighter Conor McGregor in a boxing event last summer.
Wilder is only 12 wins away from breaking Mayweather’s record at 51-0. Wilder thinks he can easily beat the record, but he’s entering the hardest part of his career now with guys like Anthony Joshua, Luis Ortiz, Tyson Fury, Jarrell Miller and Dillian Whyte waiting to get a shot against him. If Wilder can beat those guys, he might break Mayweather’s record.
“I can beat all those guys easily because I’m just now entering into the prime of my career,” said Wilder to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports News, when asked if he thinks he can break Floyd Mayweather’s record of 50-0. “I’m just walking into the door. A lot of people think I rely on my power. I don’t have to rely on something that’s naturally there. They’ll definitely be broken. They’re not goals I’m seeking. They’ll look nice on my resume,”said Wilder.
It sounds pretty crazy right now, Wilder walking about breaking Mayweather’s record. Wilder is only 32-years-old, and he’s certainly more than young enough to win another 12 fights in the next 6 years. By the time Wilder breaks Mayweather’s record, he’ll be 38. Of course, there are other fighters in boxing that also have unbeaten records and they could creep up and break Wilder’s record. Middleweight champion Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) is only 2 wins behind Wilder, although Triple G’s record isn’t perfect. GGG has a controversial draw on his resume from his recent fight against Saul Canelo Alvarez last year in September. The Nevada State Athletic Commission assigned judges felt that Golovkin didn’t do enough to beat the highly popular Golden Boy Promotions star Canelo. Don’t be surprised if Golovkin loses to Canelo in their rematch in another controversial decision. If Mayweather couldn’t earn a decision in the eyes of 1 judge over Canelo, it suggests that he’s someone that cannot be beaten by a decision. Wilder has the ability to take judges of play, which is a very freeing thing for him. It means that Wilder can fight anywhere in the world and be immune to being robbed by the judges.
The Mayweather-McGregor fight was sanctioned as a legitimate professional boxing match by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. In the olden days, a fight like that would have likely been ruled an exhibition fight.
It’s going to be tough for Wilder to break Mayweather’s record unless he can continue to score fast knockouts like we’ve been seeing with him. Wilder will need to get to Joshua’s chin in the first couple of rounds for him to beat him. Joshua was beaten in the amateur ranks by Mihai Nistor in 2011 in a 3rd round stoppage. Nistor was clocking Joshua with left hands repeatedly. Joshua was staggering by the 3rd. The referee had to stop the fight to save Joshua from getting hurt.
”I might even break George Foreman’s record of being the oldest champion,” said Wilder. ”2018 for Deontay Wilder, all I see is greatness. It’s my year, man. 2018, you’re looking at 1 champion. 1 face, 1 name, and that’s Deontay Wilder,” said Wilder.
Wilder will be fighting on March 3 in defending his WBC title against Luis Ortiz. This is not a sure thing win for Wilder. He could lose. Ortiz is a big punching southpaw with better boxing skills than Wilder. If Ortiz can land one of his big left hand shots on the chin of Wilder, he could KO him. Ortiz has the size to reach the 6’7″ Wilder’s chin.
