After a lot of back and forth, WBC heavyweight titlist Deontay Wilder says he’s ready and willing to take on Dillian Whyte — so long as he gets a clause in his contract saying he’ll get a unification shot with Anthony Joshua after that.
Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn has been vocal about wanting Wilder to take on Whyte before facing Joshua, but Wilder’s team sort of regarded that as an insulting premise considering that he was a world champion before Joshua was. But if that’s the only sticking point for Hearn, Wilder is apparently willing to concede that much. Here’s what he just told Sky Sports:
“If they want to see that fight, I have no problems fighting that fight, as long as that contract says I have Anthony Joshua next.
“Put Anthony Joshua on that contract and I will come to England. Dillian Whyte is an easy fight, I can fight that fight in my sleep, one hand behind my back.”
This is certainly good news as a Joshua-Wilder fight is the best fight to make at heavyweight at the moment. And if Wilder has to take on Whyte first as a show of good faith, well then, so be it.
“If Eddie Hearn wants me to fight Dillian Whyte, I have no problem smashing Dillian Whyte but make sure, when you have that contract, you add Anthony Joshua, because I am going to come and knock down that kingdom that I helped build up.”
With Wilder and Joshua’s fighting schedule in sync (they’re fighting back-to-back weekends) the stars could align for another huge heavyweight showdown next summer/fall. Here’s to hoping…
