A source with knowledge on the situation tells RingTV that a welterweight fight between Devon Alexander (27-4-1, 14 KOs) and Andre Berto (31-5, 24 KOs) is likely to be held on a July 28th Showtime card headlined by a lightweight unification match between Mikey Garcia and Robert Easter Jr in Los Angeles.
Alexander, 31, is most recently coming off of a disputed draw against Victor Ortiz in February, in a fight that most people believe he should’ve won. That fight was Alexander’s second outing since a two year hiatus where Alexander dealt with personal demons stemming from drug addiction.
Berto, 34, hasn’t fought since getting stopped by Shawn Porter back in early 2017. He’s gone 3-4 in his last seven fights, beating Victor Ortiz, Josesito Lopez and Steve Upsher Chambers, but losing to Robert Guerrero, Jesus Soto Karass, Floyd Mayweather, and the aforementioned Porter.
Neither fighter has been particularly active in recent years, and both are trying to cling to whatever relevancy they have left in a pretty packed welterweight division, hoping to keep a grasp on contender status.
