Dillashaw Makes Bizarre Claim About Mayweather – McGregor Glove Debate

By punditarena.com

Dillashaw, whose life was forever changed when he was labelled a “snake in the grass” by McGregor during an episode of The Ultimate Fighter 25 a couple of years back, shocked nobody when he leaned toward Mayweather – the boxer in this boxing match.

“Mayweather’s going to make him miss, he’s going to make him get tired,” Dillashaw told FightHype. “McGregor, in my opinion, doesn’t have the cardio and [Mayweather] is going to take advantage of that in the later rounds.”

The 31-year-old did, however, provide a rather surprising assessment when he was asked about the recent discussion over what sized gloves should be worn in the contest.

The fight is contracted for the super-welterweight limit of 154lbs and in line with Nevada State Athletic Commission(NSAC) regulations the fighters are set to wear 10oz gloves. However, Mayweather claimed at the beginning of last week that he would be willing to “accommodate” McGregor by altering the contract so that they could fight in 8oz gloves, which are normally only worn by boxers under 147lbs. McGregor is used to fighting in 4oz MMA gloves and conventional wisdom suggests that he is the bigger puncher of the two, so this was seen as something of a concession from Mayweather.

Dillashaw doesn’t see things that way at all, though.

“[80z gloves are] to his advantage…to Mayweather’s,” said Dillashaw. “I think Mayweather is the heavier hitter. Even though it [doesn’t look] like it when Conor fights in MMA…we are wearing 40z gloves, it’s a little bit of a different story. I still think Mayweather is the heavier hitter.”

The chatter regarding the glove issue has died down somewhat over the last few days. Perhaps that’s because it has been overshadowed by the news of Paulie Malignaggi’s sudden and acrimonious departure from the McGregor camp. Or perhaps it’s because few believe that Mayweather’s proposal was anything more than a mere attempt to make himself look good. However, there remains some small chance the gloves could be changed.

“Our regulations already outline the appropriate glove size according to contracted weight of a fight,” NSAC executive director Bob Bennett told ESPN when he was asked about the situation earlier in the week. It was a statement that seemed to dismiss any possibility of a switch to 8oz gloves. But when Pundit Arena subsequently contacted the NSAC for comment, they sent us the following statement;

“Mayweather vs. McGregor contract weight is 154lbs and our regulations require they wear 10 oz gloves. To change the weight of the gloves for the fight, [both parties] are required to submit a waiver memorializing the reasons to deviate from the aforementioned information. Thereafter both parties would be required to appear before the Nevada State Athletic Commission and articulate specific logical reason why we should deviate from our regulations. Naturally the health and safety is always our number one priority.”

Bennett also provided a similar statement to MMAFighting only hours after he spoke to ESPN and he added that the Mayweather camp had already made an inquiry about the possibility of changing the gloves. ‘The Money Team’ had not followed up with an official petition, however.

For their part, the McGregor camp has shown little interest in the matter and seem happy to fight in either sized glove.

“I don’t give a fuck about the size of the glove,” wrote McGregor on Instagram, just hours after Floyd suggested a change of gloves“I am coming sprinting at you with bricks. Know that. Brittle hands.”
