Dillian Whyte wants fight with Tyson Fury or Manuel Charr

Dillian Whyte is coming off of the biggest win of his career, a strong decision victory over former WBO titleholder Joseph Parker, and now he’s looking at what’s next.

Whyte (24-1, 17 KO) says he wants to rematch Anthony Joshua next April at Wembley Stadium, but there’s the matter of what he does later this year, as he wants another fight before facing AJ again.

Whyte’s promoter Eddie Hearn said he’d make an offer to Deontay Wilder, but that seems like it’s not going to happen, with Wilder now focused on potentially facing Tyson Fury. And Fury is one of two fighters Whyte mentions as possible opponents, too, along with WBA “world” titleholder Manuel Charr.

“Charr has the WBA belt so why not, it’s a good fight, he’s a great fighter and will come to fight. Whether he wants it is a different story, I know I do and it can be made. It’s time I got a shot.

“Then there’s Fury. The guy’s a joker and a mess, mentally and physically, he’s irrelevant right now. He’s saying he wants to fight Wilder, but he’s talking rubbish, that won’t happen and it makes no sense right now.”

Sadly for Whyte, this doesn’t seem likely to work out. Let’s start with Fury, because it’s the quicker of the two. Fury is, by accounts on both sides, very close to a deal to face Wilder in December for the WBC title. Wilder says the deal is close, not just Fury. Furthermore, Fury doesn’t seem like he’s dying to work with Eddie Hearn. Tyson is due back on August 18 in Belfast, where he faces Francesco Pianeta. If that goes well, the Wilder fight could well be next.

As for Charr, he does not have “the WBA belt.” The WBA belt is held by Anthony Joshua. Charr has the WBA “world” title, a paper belt nobody but Charr and mandatory challenger Fres Oquendo, whom he faces on September 29, really cares about. And even if Charr beats Oquendo, it seems a little unlikely he’d want to turn right around in a couple months and fight Whyte.

Whyte has said he doesn’t want to rematch Dereck Chisora, but man, that might really be the best fight he’s going to get if he insists on getting back in the ring this year.
