Dominick Cruz will be returning to the Octagon later this year.
The former UFC bantamweight champion will be taking on top contender Jimmie Rivera in a pivotal contest at UFC 219. The news was announced Wednesday night by the promotion. UFC 219 is set to take place on Dec. 30 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. No headlining fight has been announced for the card.
This bout marks Cruz’ first fight since losing his 135-pound belt to Cody Garbrandt at UFC 207last December. The loss to Garbrandt snapped a 13-fight win streak for the Alliance MMA fighter, who is 22-2 in his professional career.
Meanwhile, Rivera last fought in July where he defeated bantamweight contender Thomas Almeida. The New Jersey native is still undefeated in his UFC career, holding notable wins over Urijah Faber, Iuri Alcantara, and Pedro Munhoz.
Additionally announced for the same card, Team Alpha Male prospect Cynthia Calvillo will be taking on former UFC champion Carla Esparza in a strawweight contest.
Calvillo defeated Joanne Calderwood in her last outing back in July to improve her unbeaten record to 6-0, while Esparza outpointed Maryna Moroz in June to bounce back from her loss to Randa Markos and move her professional record to 12–4.
