Don King wins Charr-Bryan purse bid, eyes late May

The WBA’s million-dollar-minimum purse bid for Mahmoud Charr vs. Trevor Bryan has a winner: Bryan promoter Don King, who ponied up a staggering $2,000,000 for the rights to stage the fight. Charr’s side, Global Sports Management, submitted a Price-is-Right-ass bid of 1,020,000.

Antonio Gonzalez, who represented Don King Productions, showed all the documents in order and the proposed dates and places for the confrontation. The Purse distribution has will be 75% for the champion Charr and 25% for the interim Bryan.
The first option is Las Vegas or New York on May 23rd. The second is Kinsasha, Congo, on May 30, while the third possibility would be in Qatar or Saudi Arabia also on May 30.

King’s highest-profile signee at the moment is Congolese cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu, who recently defeated Michal Cieslak for the vacant WBC title in Kinshasa, so that could be an okay doubleheader if he can get “Junior” involved. Assuming, of course, that King actually puts the fight together, which he’s failed to do for nearly a year.

Is it weird that I want King to keep screwing this up? I want this to be a tradition. Decades from now, when all context is lost, I want there to be an annual gathering of boxing promoters where they once again try to put this fight together. We can make a whole festival out of it.
